メアリーもマリアも、スペルのつづりは同じ
「Maria」
でも、メアリーは本当にこの世界に存在していたけど、マリアは本当はこの世界には存在しない、ジェイムスの創った妄想。
マリア編で、マリアが自分が本当の人間ではない、と知ると同時に、ジェイムスがマリアの存在を望む限り自分は永遠にサイレントヒルを彷徨い続ける運命だと知って、マリアは何を思ったんでしょう。
「死んだ人が手紙をくれるなんて幻想に決まってるじゃない、早く立ち直ってよさっさと私を解放してよ」
と思ったんでしょうか。確かにそうは思ったでしょう。そうでもなければ、ジェイムスの行く先々で助言や手助けをしたりなんてしないだろうし。マリアはジェイムスに恋愛感情はもっていなかったと思います。むしろ彼のことが疎ましかったんじゃないでしょうか。だって、ジェイムスのせいで、マリアは何度も何度も△様に殺されては蘇生し、また殺されて、また蘇生し・・・の繰り返しですから。
いやでも、もしかしたら
「例え私が妄想の産物なのだとしても、ジェイムスが望めば、私は妄想ではなく一人の人間としてここにいられる。ジェイムスが立ち直れなくてもいい、私がこうして存在できるなら、彼と一緒にいられるならどうでもいい」
とも思っていたのかもしれません。
ストーリーが進むにつれ、マリアはジェイムスと離れることを極端に嫌がります。きっと、ジェイムスと離れると自分の存在が薄れて消えていくのではないかと、不安だったんだな、と思います。現に「Maria END」以外のEndでは、自分の存在が消えることを恐れて、マリアがジェイムスを改心させようとジェイムスに襲いかかります。結果として、完全にジェイムスの心の中から消えてしまいますが。

しかし、「Maria End」ではマリアではなくメアリーがラスボスとしてジェイムスの前に立ちふさがります。
でも、メアリーの場合はマリアのように自分の存在意義を守るために襲いかかったのではないと思います。
「私のことを忘れてしまうのは別にかまわない。でも妄想にすがりついて生きていっても、待っているのは残酷な現実だけ。ジェイムス、お願いだからそのことに気付いてほしい」と。
好きだった夫が、妄想にとらわれて自らの手で自分の人生を破滅させる、そんな姿だけは絶対に見たくなかったんだなーと。何でこんな純粋ないい人ばっかり早死にするんだろう・・・。
そして、「Maria End」のラスト、ジェイムスとマリアはサイレントヒルを出て行こうとしますが、このときのサイレントヒル、物語の始まりの時と同じく霧がかかっています。
実は、公式Endの「Inwater End」と「Leave End」の時は霧が晴れています。なのに「Maria End」の時は霧が晴れていない。これは、まだジェイムスの心にかかった霧、つまりジェイムスの犯した罪が赦されていない、ってことなんです。
まあ、奥さんのことをほっといて他の女性のくっつくだなんてことしてるんだから当たり前ですが・・・。
それよりも、私がゾッとしたのは、その後。ジェイムスと連れ添ったマリアが咳き込むんですが・・・ジェイムスがメアリーを殺す原因となったメアリーの病。その病の前兆は、咳でした。ということはマリアも同じ病にかかっているかもしれないわけで。ジェイムスはまた自分の妻が病に苦しむ姿をみるかもしれないわけで。
・・・・まあ、それで当然だと思います。
辛い過去から逃げ、妻との思い出まで捨てた男と、彼に現実の苦しみから逃げる手助けをした女。待ち受けるのは絶望的な未来だけでしょう。

・・・・と、長いし読みづらい解釈ですが；
サイレントヒル２を持っていない方にも、持っているけど結局マリアってなんだったんだという方への自分なりの考えを書かせてもらいました。最後の方かなりきついこと言ってますが、さらに付け足すと、
もしもこれから先ずっとジェイムスが反省せずにいたら、同じ様なことを何回、何十回も繰り返すかもしれないのです。何度も何度も、サイレントヒルに呼ばれては何も学ばずに帰っていく、そしてまた呼ばれる・・・。
いや、それどころかもしかすると、メアリーを殺す前にも似たようなことをしているかもしれません。私達プレイヤーが見ているのは延々と続いている負の連鎖の一部分だけなのかもしれません。
まあ、つまるところ何が言いたいかというと。

ちょっ今攻略サイト見てきたらメアリーとマリアのスペル違ってたよorz
今まで同じだとばかり・・・・o...rz

えっえええぇ！！？ううう上手くないです！これパッと見大分凝ってるように見えますけど、実際はここで描いた絵をＰＣの画像加工ツールでノイズとシャープかけただけなんです；
だから実際にはあんまり工夫して描いてないんです・・・。
あ、でも背景の「Maria.」は一応工夫しました。初めは一つ「Maria.」って描いてるだけだったんですがそれじゃあんまり寂しかったので増やしました。

あと「Maria.」はストーリー中に何度もマリアとメアリーの名前を呼ぶジェイムスの姿の暗喩・・・のつもりです（ｗ
